Mellow Boards among the 10 best Mobility Startups in Europe

E-Mobility startup Mellow Boards’ search for investors brought them to the Vienna Pioneers Festival where they competed and won the title of one of the Top 10 Startups in the Mobility sector.

Attending the Pioneers Festival is an absolute must for any ambitious European startup. Mellow Boards was invited to pitch their innovative mount-anywhere electric skateboard drive in front of over 300 assembled potential investors. At the end of the day, the Hamburger enterprise was chosen as one of the 10 European startups to watch in the Mobility & Transportation ecosystem.

No deals were closed during the event, but “just meeting with executives from PWC, Porsche Holding or the boys from Hyperloop around the table made it all worth it” says Johannes Schewe, Mellow co-founder and CEO.

Mellow Boards had already ended a successful Kickstarter campaign a year earlier. They well exceeded their crowdfunding target with over 300,000 EUR thanks to their unique idea of a modular electric drive that transforms any normal skateboard into an e-skate in the space of a few minutes. Avid boardsport enthusiasts, the Mellow team distanced themselves easily from other manufacturers by devoting themselves and their product to quality „Made in Germany“.

Head engineer and CTO, Kilian Green explains: “Mellow lets you have extreme fun, but isn’t a toy. Cities of the future will reduce or eliminate access to automobiles, so a reliable and viable alternative is needed. ”

This strategy seems to be paying off: only 7 months after Kickstarter ended, Mellow’s development and manufacturing partner TQ Systems invested 1.5 million Euros in the startup and in so doing secured the funding for development and operations up until serial production. With this Series A, the young company already had a valuation of 5 million Euros. Mellow Boards was on its way to fulfilling more than ever the nickname given by international media: “the Tiny Tesla from Germany."

According to COO Tony Günther, the pre-order phase was more than promising: “Production batches destined for pre-orders in 2016 have already been sold out. Those ordering today are obliged to go to the end of the line and will receive their Mellow Drive in March 2017.”

Mellow plans multiple distribution channels for the future in addition to its in-house online shop. The Hamburger company has already signed contracts with its first major distributors, including one hailing from Dubai, a market very receptive to high tech products with German quality.

Armed these successes, the young start continues its search for investors who are willing to financially support and advise them on the way ahead. Johannes Schewe is optimistic: “We don’t know now if our Pioneer Festival contacts will eventually bear fruit, but if you wish to take a 7-figure chance in one of the most ambitious European startups, let’s talk.”
