What the Drive is

The Mellow Drive replaces a board's rear truck assembly with a powered module approximately 366 × 174 × 59 mm and 3.9 kg. It houses dual in-wheel motors, battery pack, controllers, and wireless connectivity. Riders supply a compatible deck, front truck, and bushings tuned to their weight and style.

Modularity meant product upgrades could target the Drive generation while deck partnerships — such as Buddybuddy boards on Cruiser and Surfer SKUs — offered turnkey paths for riders who preferred not to assemble mounts themselves.

Mounting and compatibility

Period documentation emphasised longboard decks with appropriate wheelbase and flex characteristics for powered rear loads. Installation required mechanical competence — mounting hardware, belt-free hub wheels, and torque checks. Mellow's community and support materials historically addressed common setup errors: insufficient thread lock, incompatible deck flex, and unrealistic expectations about range in Pro mode on hilly routes.
